Anna, Jess and Fatima (katakeet) make zines together and separately through collage, illustration, poetry, music and narrative. The name katakeet is the plural of katkoot in Arabic, which means ‘chick’. It is used as a term of a term of endearment to each other, our inner children and our communities. It is also inspired by our love of birds and everything they teach us. It’s also a nice word to say (try it!).

Zine-making can be used to process experiences, share overlooked histories and stories, and make research projects more accessible to the communities they are about.

Our zines include research zines about creative health projects including Sawt al-Shifaa (a London-based community project about Muslim experiences of music, sound and healing) and Connecting Through Song (exploring how community-based music therapy could support the wellbeing of UK-based Cantonese diaspora communities). Our zines also explore topics such as queer ancestry in an illustrated graphic novel zine, and queer community via our collective zine about birds and healing justice.
