Anna, Jess and Fatima (katakeet) make zines together and separately through collage, illustration, poetry, music and narrative. The name katakeet is the plural of katkoot in Arabic, which means ‘chick’. It is used as a term of endearment to each other, our inner children and our communities. It is also inspired by our love of birds and everything they teach us. It’s also a nice word to say (try it!).
Zine-making can be used to process experiences, share overlooked histories and stories, and make research projects more accessible to the communities they are about.
We make zines about creativity and mental health, including research zines like Sawt al-Shifaa (a London-based community project about Muslim experiences of music, sound and healing), Connecting Through Song (exploring how community-based music therapy could support the wellbeing of UK-based Cantonese diaspora communities), and A Book of Birds, about birds and healing justice.
